Building 'Dores
Building `Dores is a unique program designed to foster elementary and middle school children's interest in team sports and physical activity. As a combatant to increasing problems in childhood obesity, Building `Dores seeks to use local role models to demonstrate how easy and how much fun participation in team sports can be.
Who
The Vanderbilt Football and Women's Basketball team sponsors this program with a targeted audience of 3rd through 7th grade students in local elementary and middle schools throughout the Middle Tennessee areas.
Why
Childhood obesity is becoming a growing national concern and Vanderbilt Athletics is dedicated to reaching out to local communities and combating this issue. There is a heavy importance in participating in team sports because it is the easiest way to make regular exercise enjoyable. Players and coaches at Vanderbilt grew up with this participation in their daily lives, so they understand the importance and are excited about the opportunity to help others find the same passion they have enjoyed while growing up.
How it works
Each PE class of participating schools will devote time to talking about the importance of physical activity. During this time, a video created by the Vanderbilt Athletic Department will be shown. This video contains information from players and coaches about the importance of participation in team sports and different ways in which a person can remain physically active in their daily lives.
Each child will then receive a time log worksheet whereon he or she will keep a log of all physical activity over a two week period. At the end of the two week period, that child will submit the entry form back to the PE teacher and those entries will be mailed back to Vanderbilt. Each child will receive a free ticket to a Vanderbilt Football and/or Women's Basketball game upon completion of the program. Parents and other family members will have to option of purchasing tickets to accompany their children at reduced rates.
Each school that enrolls receives a packet of information containing two posters, a video presentation, and a large quantity of time log sheets for students. The posters are to be hung in a visible area throughout the gym or schools and contain a blank list in the middle section. Upon completion of the program, each child successfully sending their time log back to Vanderbilt may sign the inside of the poster to track the success of each school. The school with the most signatures will win a pizza party and autograph session with Vanderbilt athletes on site at their respective school.
